UCLA Health System Statement

The following is a statement in response to the "speak out" event conducted today by the California Nurses Association union and National Nurses United. "

Over the past few weeks a small group of highly trained UCLA nurses, doctors and staff who would be on the front line treating possible Ebola patients have spent a great deal of time and thought preparing for that scenario, including carrying out a preparedness exercise with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, said Dr. Robert Cherry, Chief Medical and Quality Officer, UCLA Health System. "The safety and health of the patients we serve and all those who care for them is paramount in everything we do, " he added. This includes providing personal protective equipment that meets the latest guidelines, leaving no skin uncovered, and requiring extensive training for how to put on and remove this equipment for those who would care for a possible Ebola patient. Every day we add to our knowledge by staying in touch with other institutions and government agencies and by listening to and acting on suggestions from our staff in order to optimize our readiness."
