Because many people don't know how easy it is to effectively perform CPR - and perhaps even save a life - UCLA Medical Center is hosting mini-CPR trainings at two locations to teach local residents the simple techniques that can help a friend, neighbor or community member survive a life-threatening cardiac event.  The drop-in, hands-only CPR trainings will take place on Thursday, June 5, between 11 am and 2 pm.

UCLA Health - Santa Monica Medical Center trainings will be located on the sidewalk across from the medical center in front of the 1245 16th Street medical building, and UCLA Medical Center's will be held at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center Dining Patio between the 100 and 200 Medical Plaza buildings in Westwood.

"Hands-only CPR is just as effective as conventional CPR and can double or even triple a victim's chance of survival," said Dr. Wally Ghurabi, medical director of the hospital's Nethercutt Emergency Center as well as the Santa Monica Fire Department. "And it only takes a few minutes to acquire the skill, learn the importance of first calling 9-1-1, and gain the confidence to immediately jump in to help."

The 10-minute sessions feature a one-to-one training provided by a certified UCLA EMS expert and include practice sessions with a manikin.  Participants will also receive tips and additional educational material.

The training is part of the American Heart Association's "National CPR Week" and is one of many being held in Los Angeles County and throughout the country.

The mini-CPR trainings do not qualify for CPR certification.  For more information on certification classes, visit www.cpc.mednet.ucla.edu/course/bls
