Curriculum

First Year Residents

  1. Acquire fundamentals of patient assessment and management.
  2. Manage intrapartum and postpartum care of patients.
  3. Perform uncomplicated vaginal deliveries and primary Cesarean sections, circumcisions, tubal ligations and basic gynecologic procedures, including hysteroscopy and laparoscopy. 
  4. Learn basic surgical techniques, preoperative and post-operative care.
  5. Acquire basic skills in ultrasound.
  6. Gain basic skills in the care of ambulatory obstetrics and gynecology patients.
  7. Learn essentials of reproductive endocrinology and infertility.
  8. Rotations:
    • Gynecology - UCLA Westwood
    • Gynecology - Olive View (Floor and OR rotations)
    • Obstetrics - UCLA Westwood
    • Obstetrics - Olive View
    • Ob/Gyn Ambulatory Clinic - UCLA Westwood (West Medical Clinic, special focus on family planning, low- and high-risk obstetrics, and specialty services including pelvic pain clinic)
    • Ob/Gyn Ambulatory Clinic - Olive View (special focus on ambulatory gynecology, high risk obstetrics, gynecologic oncology, and colposcopy)
    • Night float - UCLA Westwood and Olive View
    • Ultrasound
    • REI

Second Year Residents

  1. Manage normal and complicated antepartum and intrapartum obstetrical patients.
  2. Perform normal and complicated deliveries, repeat and emergent cesarean sections.
  3. Perform normal and uncomplicated major and minor gynecologic surgeries.
  4. Participate in a focused experience in inpatient Gynecologic Oncology.
  5. Participate in a focused experience in FPMRS covering both clinic and surgical cases. 
  6. Participate in a focused experience in Family Planning, gaining experience in the full range of family planning services and procedures. 
  7. Gain additional experience in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. 
  8. Complete Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery course and become FLS certified.
  9. Rotations:
    • Gynecologic Oncology - UCLA Westwood
    • Gynecology - Olive View
    • Obstetrics - UCLA Santa Monica
    • FPMRS - UCLA Westwood and UCLA Santa Monica
    • Family Planning - UCLA Westwood (ambulatory clinic, and 2 OR/procedure days per week)
    • Ob/Gyn Ambulatory Clinic - Olive View (focus on high risk obstetrics, ambulatory gynecology, gynecologic oncology, and FPMRS)
    • Night Float - UCLA Westwood (antepartum/labor focus) and Olive View
    • REI

Third Year Residents

  1. Perform complicated deliveries and obstetrical procedures.
  2. Focus on antepartum management of high-risk pregnancies.
  3. Refine operative skills in gynecologic surgery, including minimally invasive surgery.
  4. Gain additional experience in FPMRS.
  5. Conduct research in obstetrics and gynecology and present findings at year-end presentation.
  6. Refine skills in gynecologic and obstetrical ultrasound.
  7. Rotations:
    • Gynecology - UCLA Santa Monica
    • Gynecology (FPMRS focused) - Olive View
    • Gynecology (MIGS focused) - Kaiser Woodland Hills
    • Obstetrics (High Risk) - UCLA Westwood
    • Obstetrics - Olive View (service chief)
    • Night float - UCLA Westwood, UCLA Santa Monica, and Olive View
    • Ultrasound
    • Elective rotation

Fourth Year Residents

  1. Lead Obstetrics and Gynecologic services at both major training sites, supervising junior residents.
  2. Manage all aspects of patient care under faculty supervision.
  3. Supervise and teach junior residents and medical students.
  4. Participate in a focused experience in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery.
  5. Perform complicated deliveries and advanced gynecologic procedures.
  6. Rotations:
    • Gynecology - Olive View (service chief)
    • Gynecology - UCLA Westwood (service chief)
    • Gynecology (MIGS focused) - UCLA Santa Monica
    • Obstetrics - UCLA Westwood (service chief)
    • Ob/Gyn Ambulatory Clinic - UCLA Westwood West Medical Clinic (special focus on family planning, low- and high-risk obstetrics, and specialty services including pelvic pain clinic) (service chief)
    • Ob/Gyn Ambulatory Clinic - Olive View (special focus on benign ambulatory gynecology, gynecologic oncology, high risk obstetrics, and FPMRS)
    • Night Float - UCLA Westwood and Olive View
