Gynecology

Overview Surgery

Currently there are four centers where residents operate: UCLA Westwood campus, Olive View Medical Center, UCLA Santa Monica,and Kaiser Woodland Hills. Highlights include:

  • Fellowship programs in Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Family Planning, Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, and Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery, providing access to high quality and complexity of cases in these services.
  • High volume of minimally invasive surgery including transvaginal and laparoscopic hysterectomy and incontinence and prolapse surgery, and laparoscopic and robotic myomectomy.
  • Significant exposure to inpatient care and surgical management in Gynecologic Oncology across all four years, with integrated benign/onc gynecology services at both main sites. 
  • Dedicated Family Planning rotation where residents are trained in state of the art management of family planning needs for both low and high risk patients.
  • Dedicated REI and Ultrasound rotations.
  • Focused Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery experiences. Our UCLA FPMRS fellowship includes faculty and fellows with both Ob/Gyn and Urology training, creating a unique, rich, collaborative environment. 
  • Anatomy lab and simulation labs for surgical training. 
  • Resources and support for all residents to be certified in Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) well in advance of graduation.
  • Robotic curriculum provided with the option to complete a certificate of Da Vinci System Training.

Obstetrics

Overview RR Campus

Residents participate in labor and delivery care at UCLA Westwood, UCLA Santa Monica and Olive View Medical Center. Residents are involved in a majority of deliveries at each hospital. Highlights include:

  • ~4,000 vaginal deliveries for all facilities
  • 75% of patients are considered “high risk”
  • Services at UCLA Westwood and Olive View sites are fully resident-run units where, under attending supervision, senior residents oversee junior residentss in both medical and surgical care of all patients, allowing in-depth and progressive technical and supervisory experience throughout residency. 
  • At UCLA Santa Monica, the resident gains autonomy running a lower-risk labor and delivery service independently with the supervision of an attending physician.
  • Rich operative obstetrical experience with a high number of complicated cesareans.
  • UCLA has a strong MFM fellowship program, which brings additional exposure to high risk pregnancies and enhances formalized teaching.
  • Midwifery service at UCLA Santa Monica, providing exposure to a different patient population and techniques. 
  • Noelle simulation training.

Primary and Preventative Care

Ambulatory care experience is gained through dedicated ambulatory care rotations during each year of training. Residents gain experience in the full range of ambulatory care scenarios, including management of diabetes, thyroid disease, hypertension, geriatric medicine, menopause and the full range of routine and complex obstetrical and gynecologic issues. Residents also participate in subspecialty clinics. Outpatient Ob/Gyn rotations allow residents to adequately meet the requirement for primary and preventative care.

Sites

Overview SM Campus

There are three primary training sites for UCLA Ob/Gyn residents: Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, a tertiary care center located in Westwood, and Olive View Medical Center, an LA County facility located in the San Fernando Valley and UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center, a small university affiliated community hospital located on the Westside of Los Angeles. Residents also gain considerable surgical experience at Kaiser Woodland Hills.
