Primary Didactics

Core

The program's didactic activities centers around its core education program given each Wednesday morning.  Lectures dealing with basic science, clinical science and ethics are given by faculty and members of other departments. In addition to this core curriculum program, anatomy dissections are carried out in the summer months by the residents under supervision of a faculty member and presented to the group.

On the first Wednesday of each month, the program will consist of a core lecture, QA conference, and a lecture usually by a visiting speaker. Clinics and non-emergency surgeries will be closed until the completion of the program.

Service Conferences

Conferences are held for individual services including trauma, sports, hand, pediatrics, spine and tumor on a weekly basis. The West Los Angeles Veterans Administration Hospital, Shriners Hospital and Harbor-UCLA Hospital hold their respective conferences.

Journal Club

Journal club is held on a monthly basis and hosted at the homes of our faculty members. Residents are required to review 6-8 articles to evaluate the design, hypothesis, statistics and results as part of their discussions.

Quality Assurance

Quality Assurance Conference is held monthly on the third Wednesday of each month. The presenting resident is required to search appropriate literature and to report the available literature on the patient's condition to the attendings and resident staff. Discussion and feedback by faculty and residents follow presentations.
