Bi-Weekly Virology Seminar Series

It is essential for researchers to keep abreast of the work being done by colleagues in a variety of disciplines. To facilitate this, the UCLA-CDU CFAR and the UCLA AIDS Institute sponsors a bi-monthly conference featuring presentations made by researchers working in both basic and translational sciences, clinical therapeutics and biomedical prevention. The topics covered include, among many others, host-virus interactions, novel therapeutics, vaccines, stem-cell research, aging, and viral pathogenesis. The Bi-monthly Multidisciplinary Virology Seminar Series is an in-person meeting from 9:00am to 10:00am in the Biomedical Science Research Building (BSRB) 154 every other Tuesday (click for schedule).  A light breakfast will be available during the meeting.

HIV GRAND ROUNDS

The HIV Grand Rounds series, offered by UCLA-CDU CFAR, UCLA CHIPTS, and the UCLA AIDS Institute, consists of hour-long lunchtime lectures that are delivered by invited guests or distinguished members of the Institute faculty on a broad range of HIV-related topics.

The aims of the Grand Rounds series are to:

  • Share the latest research findings on HIV prevention, care, and treatment, and highlight important developments in HIV-related research.
  • Encourage scientific collaborations and networking between UCLA investigators and invited speakers.
  • Excite an interest in HIV/AIDS research for early career investigators, and provide resources about new research findings, funding, and career opportunities.

  • Eyes on Ukraine

Eyes on Ukraine is a short-form documentary that examines what happens when two crises collide: HIV and war. The film builds awareness around HIV, which, contrary to much of the world, is an escalating crisis in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Through highly personal photographs and stories, it highlights the challenges people living with the virus face in Ukraine during times of war.

    Synopsis

This 35-minute film follows 24-year-old Yana Panfilova, a Ukrainian HIV-positive activist living in Berlin. Born with the virus and exiled from her home in Kyiv because of the war with Russia, she continues to run Teenergizer, a large youth organization which supports young people in Ukraine who face challenges around HIV and mental health. To shed light on the growing HIV crisis and stigma associated with the virus in her country, Yana works with veteran photographer Gideon Mendel who, after decades chronicling the epidemic, has decided to hand over the camera to HIV-positive people, turning subjects into creators. After Gideon trains Yana to use photography as a tool to tell her story, she sets out to share moments of her life. Her effort becomes pivotal as she inspires three young people living with HIV from Ukraine to join forces. After completing their own photographic training in Berlin, Liza, Mariia and Yehor return to Ukraine to shed light on a unique crisis during a difficult time in history.
