Alport Syndrome
Expert, family-centered care for a genetic kidney disease
Founded by Anjay Rastogi, MD, PhD, Professor and Clinical Chief of Nephrology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, the Alport Syndrome Program at UCLA Health provides comprehensive care, cutting-edge research, and education for patients and families living with Alport syndrome.
Alport syndrome affects the kidneys, hearing, and eyes, and often runs in families. Our program brings the specialists, genetic expertise, and clinical trials patients need together in one place.
Our approach: one team, whole-person care
Alport syndrome affects more than the kidneys, so our care does too. Patients are seen by a coordinated, multidisciplinary team spanning:
• Adult and pediatric nephrology for early kidney protection and long-term management, from childhood through adulthood
• Genetics and genetic counseling for diagnostic testing, interpretation of results, and family screening
• Ophthalmology and otolaryngology (ENT) to monitor and manage vision and hearing changes
• Radiology for advanced imaging and diagnostic support
• Dialysis and transplant, including home dialysis options and living-donor evaluation tailored to genetic kidney disease
• Nutrition, with a registered dietitian to guide kidney-healthy eating, including lower-sodium diets
• Psychology to support emotional well-being for patients and families
• Patient advocacy to connect patients and families with resources, support networks, and community
What we offer
• Accurate diagnosis: genetic testing and counseling to confirm the diagnosis, identify the inheritance pattern, and guide treatment
• Family (cascade) screening to identify at-risk relatives early, when treatment can make the greatest difference
• Early, proactive kidney protection with evidence-based therapies to slow disease progression and preserve kidney function
• Access to clinical trials of promising investigational therapies for Alport syndrome, available to eligible patients through our research program
• Seamless transition of care from pediatric to adult services
• Comprehensive planning for advanced kidney disease, including dialysis options, kidney transplantation, and careful evaluation of family members who wish to become living donors
