Nystagmus is an involuntary, rhythmic oscillation of the eyes. The eye movements may be side-to-side, up and down or rotary. In one form of nystagmus (pendular nystagmus), the speed of motion is the same in both directions. In another form (jerk nystagmus), eye movements are faster in one direction than another. Nystagmus may be present at birth (congenital) or acquired later in life. It may result from abnormal binocular fixation early in life. It also may accompany a number of eye disorders and neurological disorders, and be a reaction to alcohol and certain drugs.
