Patients with macular holes experience a spontaneous, partial or total loss of sharp, central vision. Macular holes may be caused by eye injuries, certain eye disease, and eye inflammation, but generally result from the normal aging process. In aging, the vitreous gel in the eye shrinks and separates from the retina. This sometimes pulls on the macula, causing a hole to form. Macular holes may begin gradually, causing central vision to be blurred and distorted. Patients with full-thickness macular holes experience a significant loss of central vision.
