Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelids. Associated with an altered activity of the oil glands and skin surface bacteria, the condition causes debris and dandruff-like scales to form at the base of the eyelashes along the lid margin. Blepharitis can start in childhood and continue throughout life as a chronic condition, or it can start later in life. It typically occurs in those who have oily skin, dandruff or dry eyes.

Signs and Symptoms

Dandruff-like scales along the base of the lashes and lid margins; redness, dryness, swelling and itching of the eyelids; in more severe cases, inflammation of the cornea

Treatment

Daily, aggressive cleansing of the lid margins, possible application of an antibiotic ointment
