Pathways
We offer five pathways within our program to individualize the resident experience and gain exposure to fields within internal medicine: Medical Education, Health Systems & Management, Global Health, Health Equity & Advocacy, and Research. Each pathway provides mentorship by a core group of faculty and the opportunity to participate in scholarship
Medical Education
Residents have a large impact on medical education within the residency. Those who are particularly passionate about medical education are encouraged to participate in the Medical Education pathway. Whether or not in the pathway, residents can work on scholarly projects with a mentor who is heavily involved in education. Resident projects have majorly contributed to the resident curriculum over the years.
Health Systems & Management
There are a myriad of opportunities, including a pathway for residents to learn more about healthcare management, health policy, and delivery innovation. In the Health Systems and Management pathway, residents are taught LEAN methodology for quality improvement and have protected time for longitudinal projects. Mentorship from experts allows residents to build a strong foundation for a career in this field.
Global Health
All residents have the option of doing a global health rotation. For residents who would like to focus on global health, there is also a global health pathway that allows residents to have more time abroad and also gain mentorship and resources to conduct research on a topic relating to global health. Possible sites include Malawi, Peru, Thailand, and Shiprock, New Mexico.
Health Equity and Advocacy
The Health Equity Pathway is designed to help train residents interested in understanding and mitigating health disparities in the United States and engaging in advocacy. The pathway emphasizes clinical training with underserved populations, but also aims to train residents in advocacy, medical and community education, and health systems research. Possible clinical experiences include electives in homeless outreach, gender health, refugee health, and HIV.
Research
The research pathway is an additional structure for residents who are seriously a career in research and are not already enrolled in the PSTP program. Through the pathway, residents will receive additional support to help shape their research careers through dedicated mentorship, development seminars, research events, and networking opportunities. Additional protected time for research will also be provided.
