Clerkships (Sub-Internships)
Clerkships
The Department of Neurosurgery at UCLA offers medical students a variety of clinical electives yearly. Clinical clerkships allow students considering a residency in Neurosurgery the chance to work with our faculty and current residents and fellows in all aspects of Neurosurgery service, as well as interact with faculty in other departments who regularly work with the Department of Neurosurgery.
Fourth Year Medical Students (Sub-Internships)
The Sub-internship clerkship consists of a four-week clinical rotation. Three weeks are spent at the primary training site, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, and one week at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, a Los Angeles County Public Hospital.
Sub-I students are an integral part of the neurosurgery service, assisting members of the house staff and faculty. Activities include ward and ICU rounds, observing and assisting in the OR, taking night call, and attending multiple teaching conferences. Students also work directly with faculty and clinical staff in outpatient clinics. The rotation offers motivated medical students an excellent opportunity to contribute to an active neurosurgery service. The experience allows students to participate in the training environment first-hand and observe residents at all stages of the training process, which informs students as they consider what would be the best training environment for their career.
Applications open in early February and are reviewed on a rolling basis. Please submit date requests via this form for 2026 clerkships. Students must submit a current CV and Letter of Recommendation to [email protected] for selection committee preview. Students will also need to complete a formal application via VSLO on or after March 9, 2026.
