A pterygium is a wedge-shaped growth of tissue on the cornea. What causes pterygia to develop is not known; significant exposure to sunlight may be a factor. A pterygium generally grows slowly, and then stops after a certain point. It seldom grows so large as to affect vision. Patients often want to remove pterygia for cosmetic reasons. If a pterygium is surgically removed, it may grow back.
