Spots on the eye

Spots on the eye refer to visible spots (ie, markings) that are actually on the eye. Spots or marks on the eye may be caused by a number of conditions, some serious and others not.

For example, an aggressive sneeze or hard coughing fit can break the tiny blood vessels in the white of the eye (sclera) and create a red spot on the eye. This condition is not serious and usually goes away on its own.

Spots on the eye may be caused by other conditions, such as a melanoma, which can have serious consequences if not treated.

Spots on the eye may be a symptom of:

  • Melanoma
  • Pterygium
