Our bariatric endoscopy research team is seeking to better understand patient outcomes in the emerging field of bariatric endoscopy. Research over the past decade has revealed some of the biological mechanisms that trigger weight loss after bariatric surgery. But questions remain, such as the impact of endoscopic bariatric procedures on long-term weight loss management and prevention of co-morbidities; and the selection of optimal candidates for various endoscopic bariatric procedures.
Faculty are active in the development and testing of novel therapeutic endoscopic techniques, including analysis of outcomes of endoscopic revision of gastric bypass surgery for individuals who have experienced weight regain. These investigations will help us understand the biologic processes responsible for reestablishing weight loss after endoscopic revision surgery, such as the effects of the procedure on hormones that govern eating habits and glucose metabolism.
Additionally, while gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy surgery have been the mainstay in bariatric surgery for many years, many less-invasive endoscopic procedures are emerging which may be effective for weight loss while speeding recovery and reducing cost and the risk of side effects. We are evaluating new primary endoscopic therapies for obesity. We are participating in a clinical trial of a promising new bariatric procedure called endoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, which features transoral endoscopy to suture and reshape the stomach. The research is intended to clarify how this procedure impacts hunger and satiety cues and eating behavior. We are also evaluating new technologies and techniques for the treatment of post-surgical complications.
