The Ahmanson/UCLA Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center is the first and one of the largest facilities of its kind in the United States.

The center is a tertiary care national and international resource that provides services to the growing number of patients with congenital heart disease who reach adulthood. In addition to its emphasis on the highest quality of patient care, the Center is a major training and research facility for medical and pediatric house officers, medical and pediatric cardiologists, and visiting cardiologists from the United States and abroad.

Transition Program for Adolescents and Young Adults with Congenital Heart Disease

We are pleased to announce the creation of the Adolescent/Young Adult Transitional Care Program, for Congenital Heart Disease. The program is the combined efforts of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology and the Ahmanson/UCLA Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center. Dr. Leigh Reardon and Mary M. Canobbio RN, MN are the program coordinators. Services include:

  • Consultative -- outpatient and inpatient
  • Access to affiliated consultants in related fields
  • Comprehensive diagnostic facilities
  • Comprehensive cardiac and medical management
  • Therapeutic interventional cardiac catheterization and electrophysiological facilities
  • Obstetric and gynecologic consultation and management
  • Surgical and peri-operative management
  • Heart, lung and heart/lung transplantation
  • Psychological support
  • Adolescent/Young Adult Transitional Care for Congenital Heart Disease
  • Fetal and Pediatric Cardiology

The purpose of the program is to prepare teens, young adults and their parents to move from pediatric to adult-based health care.

The program provides comprehensive treatment of adolescents with congenital heart disease, ages 15 to 20.  Services provided include clinical assessment of the adolescent's self-management skills, the development of an individualized transitional plan of care.  We also provide patient and parent education sessions and counseling.  Additionally a number of non-cardiac services have been added such as adolescent gynecologic services which will include contraceptive counseling.

New Patient Information

Patients who are new to the Ahmanson/UCLA Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center should ideally have their doctor's mail or fax in cardiac related medical records prior to scheduling an appointment. Please include the following:

  • Cardiology Progress Notes
  • Echocardiogram Reports (including stress echo's and transesophogeal echo's)
  • Cardiac MRI/CT
  • Electrocardiograms (ECG)
  • Cardiac Catheterizations
  • Surgical reports
  • Recent Labs

In addition to the above records, we require a digital copy of the patient's echocardiogram on CD for studies performed within a one-year period from the date of the appointment. This can usually be arranged with the organization that performed the study.
