Cerebral Palsy Evaluation
Cerebral Palsy Evaluations
Orthopedic evaluations are the first step in understanding how cerebral palsy affects movement and growth. In some cases, the visit shows that no further treatment is needed. In others, it helps identify the next steps toward improving comfort and independence.
Clinic Visits
Evaluations are offered at our clinics in Santa Monica and Los Angeles. The first visit includes a comprehensive evaluation with one of two specialists:
- Physiatrists are physicians with special training in physical medicine and rehabilitation. They offer comprehensive care for your nonsurgical needs.
- Orthopedic surgeons treat patients with bone and muscle problems that require surgical care. They also monitor hip and spine development in children and address orthopedic complications that may arise in adulthood.
Selective Control Assessment of the Lower Extremity (SCALE) tool
We often use the SCALE tool to measure voluntary leg movement in patients ages 4 and up. Our team developed this tool, and we have the most experience using it to guide care.
The results help:
- Guide treatment planning by indicating whether surgery, bracing, therapy or other options are likely to help.
- Track progress over time, giving us a consistent way to see changes in movement and function.
Kameron Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory
Sometimes, an evaluation requires a closer look at how you or your child moves. In these cases, we refer you to the Kameron Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory, located in our Westwood Rehabilitation Services Center.
This detailed testing can take several hours and may include physical exams, motion sensors and video recordings. The results provide our specialists with an in-depth understanding of muscle strength, flexibility and walking patterns.
Clinic Visits for Out-of-Area and International Patients
Children and adults may travel nationally and even internationally to visit our experienced team.
If you are an international patient, you must go through screening and pre-approval with International Services. This process includes submitting medical records and arranging payment details before an appointment can be scheduled.
Please do not make any travel arrangements until you have a confirmed appointment. This may take several weeks. Someone will contact you to schedule an appointment after you’ve received clearance from the International Services team.
