Cerebral Palsy Research and Education
Cerebral Palsy Research
Orthopedic cerebral palsy services at UCLA Health reflect the latest scientific advancements, due in part to our active role in research. Studies on movement, muscle control and bone development give our team insights that translate into better evaluations and more effective treatment plans for you or your child.
Much of this work takes place at:
- Kameron Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory: We research issues related to mobility, muscle strength and motor control. Studies may include developing assessment tools, measuring muscle stiffness or researching factors that affect surgical outcomes.
- Marie and Alexander Shipman Cerebral Palsy Muscle Disease Research Laboratory: We focus on developing therapies to improve spasticity and other cerebral palsy symptoms. Our goal is to improve function and quality of life.
Open Cerebral Palsy Research Studies
Our team continually studies new and promising ways to improve orthopedic care for cerebral palsy. You or your child may have access to novel therapies through research studies. To learn more about current research opportunities, contact us at [email protected].
Cerebral Palsy Education
Educating others in the most up-to-date approaches and treatments is part of our role as an academic medical center. In our clinical practice, we teach and train medical students, residents and fellows. We also help educate patients and other health care professionals.
Annual Family Forum
This event is for people with cerebral palsy, their families and caregivers. Participants hear from UCLA Health experts and community partners on topics such as orthopedic care, spasticity management, therapies, advocacy and resources. The forum is also a chance to connect with other families and learn practical strategies for everyday life.
Please visit CP Family Forum - Luskin Orthopaedic Institute for Children if you’re interested in attending our next Family Forum.
International Outreach
We partner with United Cerebral Palsy’s Momentum Wheels for Humanity program to improve care in developing countries. We travel overseas to train therapists in the best research-based approaches for children and adults with neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy.
Cerebral Palsy Publications
Your cerebral palsy care team includes doctors who have published research to advance the field. Our research interests include:
- How cerebral palsy affects walking
- How muscles work and respond to treatment
- Ways to improve evaluations and testing
- What happens inside muscles with cerebral palsy
