Bronchoscopy Procedure at Santa Monica

Bronchoscopy

Bronchoscopy is a procedure that allows visualization of the upper and lower respiratory tract for the diagnosis and management of diseases of the airway and lungs. This procedure is performed by specially trained physicians and assisted by Respiratory Therapists that undergo extensive training and competency testing. Bronchoscopy is used as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool for management of the airway.

At UCLA Medical Center Santa Monica the primary role of the Respiratory Therapist includes preparation and monitoring of the patient as well as assisting the physcian with the collection of lung biopsies and samples. Respiratory Therapists also assist the physician with cauterization and cryogenic procedures, foreign body removal and tracheostomy. Bronchoscopies are performed for patient populations ranging from Pediatric to Geriatric.
