Thyroid Nodule Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA): Patient Experience
UCLA Health Endocrine Surgery: RFA Patient Experience
This is the story of Wendy, an actress who stars in a nationally broadcast television show. Her fans had begun noticing a lump in her neck, and it became a source of concern for both Wendy and her audience.
Wendy sought care at the UCLA Endocrine Center, where she underwent a thorough evaluation. Testing revealed that the thyroid nodule was benign, meaning it was not cancerous. Because of this, she was offered radiofrequency ablation, or RFA, a minimally invasive office-based procedure that typically takes about 45 minutes.
During RFA, a small probe is guided into the thyroid nodule using ultrasound. Energy is then delivered to the nodule over several minutes, causing it to gradually shrink over the following months. Most patients experience a reduction in nodule volume of more than 50%, with many achieving even greater shrinkage.
The procedure is generally well tolerated, involves minimal recovery time, and has a very low risk of complications. Wendy returned to her normal activities immediately after treatment.
Over the next several months, her thyroid nodule steadily decreased in size until the visible lump in her neck was no longer noticeable. With her confidence restored, Wendy returned to her acting career without the distraction or concern of a prominent neck mass.
Today, she continues to pursue new roles and auditions, grateful for a treatment option that addressed her thyroid nodule without surgery and allowed her to quickly return to the work she loves.
