Overview

In 2021, UCLA received a transformational gift to establish the Dr. Allen and Charlotte Ginsburg Center for Precision Genomic Medicine. Among the Ginsburg Center’s highest priority initiatives is the creation of the UCLA Stem Cell and Genome Engineering center (HSCGEC). The HSCGEC serves as a hub for existing stem cell and genome engineering efforts within UCLA and the West Coast.

Through the Ginsburg Center for Precision Genomic Medicine, scientists and physicians work side by side to examine the role of genetics in disease with the goal of developing novel therapies that improve patients’ lives and Dr. Allen and Charlotte Ginsburg’s philanthropy is catalyzing innovative solutions to complex medical challenges. Their dedication and support for scientific research will undoubtedly contribute to advancing our understanding of stem cells and help pave the way for new treatments and therapies. We extend our appreciation to Dr. Allen and Charlotte GINSBURG for their philanthropic spirit and their commitment to making a positive impact in the world.

Research & Core Activities

The center at UCLA provides cutting-edge services focused on generating pluripotent stem cells from patient samples; genome engineering and editing services for basic core and preclinical research; and chemical and CRISPR screenings including CRISPR mediated activation and/or inhibition of genes. Apart from its core function, the center also engages in its own independent research, optimizing published techniques to ensure reliable and reproducible methodology, and pioneering novel differentiation paradigms.

The center is dedicated to supporting work involving human stem cells in California. The HSCGEC maintains and provides well-characterized human embryonic stem (hES) cell lines and human induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell lines.

In addition to providing all the cells, reagents, and equipment necessary for stem cell culture, the Center Director and staff provide consultation on experimental design to all researchers and can assist in getting projects involving pluripotent cells moving quickly. The facility is centrally located on the UCLA campus, making it convenient for UCLA researchers to 'drop in' to care for their cell cultures while staying within easy reach of their home laboratories.
