This page addresses common questions related to the UCLA Health Shadowing Policy. The UCLA Health Sciences Volunteer Program does not offer shadowing or observation opportunities.

I want to shadow at UCLA Health, what do I need to do?

Individual shadowing are not permitted, even if a health professional offers or agrees to the shadowing request. Shadowing is only allowed through a UCLA Health/DGSOM Formalized and Approved Shadowing Program, and must occur during a designated and assigned shift.

Instead of shadowing, we strongly encourage students to pursue longer-term, hands-on experiences involving patient interaction in clinical settings—such as through the Care Extenders Program or the General Student Volunteer Program. However, please be aware that these programs are not considered Approved Shadowing Programs.

I am part of a shadowing program, can this qualify as credit/training?

No, all shadowing activities completed through the approved shadowing programs are for observation only and cannot be part of a training, formal rotation, or credited course.

Do I have to come in-person to shadow?

Yes, all approved shadowing opportunities must be in-person. Joining any clinical services remotely or virtually is not permitted.

Can I apply as a Volunteer and shadow my supervisor?

No. Individual volunteers or students—including UCLA SRP Students—are not permitted to shadow UCLA health professionals as part of their volunteer or student role, even if a health professional offers or agrees to the shadowing request.
