Orbital decompression surgery is used to create more space for the contents of the orbit by removing bone and fat from behind the eye. This relieves pressure within the eye socket, reducing the possibility of damage to the optic nerve. It also allows the eye to move back into a more normal position in the eye socket. There are a number of techniques available for decompression. The technique used depends upon the particular case.

Immediately following surgery, patients may experience some double vision. This usually improves with time but, in some cases, a second operation is needed to realign the muscles of the eye. Cosmetic surgery may be necessary to restore appearance.
