Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is performed to improve the appearance of drooping eyelids and/or puffiness or bags around the eyes. Blepharoplasty may be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or all four lids. Typically, the surgeon makes incisions following the natural lines of the eyelids to minimize the visibility of any scarring. In upper blepharoplasty, a fine incision is made in the lid crease above each eye; in lower blepharoplasty, it is made through the conjunctiva. No skin incision is made. Working through these incisions, the surgeon removes excess skin and muscle, as well as fat (puffiness). The incisions are closed with fine sutures, which are generally removed within one week.
