Laser skin resurfacing uses laser technology to remove or soften wrinkles and scars. The laser is a device that generates an intense beam of focused light, which converts to thermal energy. When applied to skin resurfacing, it provides a controlled shedding of several layers of damaged skin. This exposes a new, fresh layer of skin with a more even color and smoother texture. It also stimulates new cells to grow, thereby tightening the skin and decreasing wrinkling. Laser skin resurfacing can be used on the full face or a specific region of the face such as around the eyes or mouth.
Most people take seven to ten days to heal from laser skin resurfacing. The skin looks as if it has a severe sunburn, so most patients choose to stay out of sight during the healing time. Laser skin resurfacing is an elective procedure and is not covered by insurance.
