How do I apply to be a START Scholar?
The application is expected to open on July 1, 2026. Submit your application by Oct. 10, 2026.
What is a mentoring mosaic?
The mentoring mosaic will engage in formal mentoring (planned and managed activities with targeted and structured mentoring) and informal mentoring (nonsystematic counsel). This mentoring approach fosters staged development, in which one experience builds on the previous experience. For the graduate students and postdoctoral trainees, the research plan and mentorship will be developed in close consultation with each trainee’s academic supervisor at their home institution to ensure a smooth incorporation of the project into the trainee’s existing professional or academic activities.
Is this program available for an undergraduate student?
No, the Scientific Training in Addictions and Research Training (START) program is only available to PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, and early career faculty.
I am not a U.S. Citizen, can I apply to START?
Based on grant guidelines, It would vary on your institution and visa status. Please email [email protected] for more information.
When will I find out if I’ve been accepted into START?
Applicants will be notified of their admission decision by end of November via email.
What are the components of the START Application?
CV, unofficial transcript, statement of interest, and letter of support as a single PDF document. You will be required to upload this document to this application.
The statement of interest must address the following:
Your academic achievements,
How your research program can be enhanced or developed with ABCD/HBCD,
Why this program is meaningful to you, and 4) describe why you should be selected for this program.
The letter of support should be written by your advisor, PI, or department chair, which includes an acknowledgement of your participation and confirms that you will be given the time and support necessary to pursue this program's requirements.
