START trainees use data from both the HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study and the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study. The HBCD Study is the largest long-term study of early brain development and child health in the United States, follows children from infancy through early childhood to understand the effects of prenatal and early life experiences. The ABCD Study is the largest long-term study of brain development and child health in adolescence, tracking nearly 12,000 youth from ages 9 to 10 into early adulthood to examine how childhood experiences impact brain, behavior and health outcomes. It has produced a robust database and an international network of prolific scholars. START trainees participate in a hybrid training curriculum to gain the skills needed to conduct research using the HBCD and ABCD studies and be successful independent substance misuse researchers.
