The department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at UCLA examines approximately 1000 renal biopsies per year. We provide expert academic renal pathology consultations using state-of-the-art diagnostics on native and transplant kidney biopsies for adult and pediatric patients to local, regional and national clients. UCLA pathologists are experts in interpreting nephrectomy specimens and evaluating post-transplantation complications, including lymphoproliferative disorders and viral infections.

Biopsy results:

  • Same-day, weekend and holiday preliminary result; STAT light microscopy service available
  • Results are called to the referring physician for light microscopic and immunofluorescence analysis within 24 hours of biopsy receipt (Immunofluorescence results are not available on weekends and holidays)
  • Electron microscopy are results available within three business days after sample receipt
  • Extensive clinicopathologic correlation and timely communication with referring physicians
  • Online biopsy review with nephrologist via secure, encrypted Web-Ex connection upon request
  • Comprehensive reports incorporating the diagnosis with clinical/laboratory information and biopsy images
  • Periodic interactive teleconferences may be scheduled upon request
