Functional GI disorders affect a substantial portion of the population - estimates range from 10 to 20 percent of Americans - and for some individuals, these conditions can be quite severe and even debilitating. Individuals with functional GI disorders typically do not show any structural abnormalities, and treatment is often challenging. However, a growing body of evidence indicates that these disorders are rooted in disruptions in the communication between the brain and the gut. The Vatche and Tamar Manoukian Division of Digestive Diseases is a leader in approaching these disorders through a paradigm in which the brain-gut axis is central to diagnosis and treatment. We view patients holistically - providing integrative care that combines the best pharmacological treatments with selected complementary therapies, including mind-body approaches.
