The G. Oppenheimer Center for Neurobiology of Stress and Resilience (CNSR), based in the Vatche and Tamar Manoukian Division of Digestive Diseases, is leading the way toward an enhanced understanding of how stress, pain and emotion interact in health and disease - particularly in the digestive system - by using cutting-edge technologies such as brain imaging, molecular biology and genetic approaches to learn more about the neurobiological underpinnings of mind/brain/body interactions.
CNSR researchers are world leaders in unraveling the relationship between alterations in brain-gut interactions and the development of functional GI disorders. Center investigators are also homing in on sex-related differences in the pathophysiology and treatment response of these disorders - which affect women at far higher rates than men. The center works with industry in developing new drugs for irritable bowel syndrome, participating in both laboratory experiments and human clinical trials. By better understanding mind/brain/body interactions, the center is able to develop new strategies to improve the health of these complex disorders.
