Dr. Wakil earned his medical degree with honors from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) Bahrain. He then moved to the United States and completed his internal medicine residency training at Saint Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland—a clinical affiliate of Johns Hopkins Medicine, where he completed his specialized gastroenterology rotations and served as chief resident. Following residency, Dr. Wakil completed a fellowship in transplant hepatology at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS), where he subsequently joined the faculty as an assistant professor of medicine and attending transplant hepatologist. During his two years on faculty at Rutgers, his dedication to medical education earned him a prestigious nomination for the Golden Apple Teaching Award.

He then went on to complete his gastroenterology fellowship at The Brooklyn Hospital Center, a clinical affiliate of Mount Sinai and the Icahn School of Medicine. Demonstrating exceptional academic excellence, Dr. Wakil scored in the 99th percentile nationally on his gastroenterology training examinations during all three years of his fellowship. Additionally, he led his team to win first place in the prestigious national ACG EndoTitan competition. He remains highly active in academic medicine, having presented multiple research projects at national meetings and published numerous peer-reviewed articles and medical book chapters.
