Ophthalmologic Anesthesiology
The Division of Ophthalmologic Anesthesiology at UCLA provides anesthesia care for nearly 6000 surgery cases each year at the Wasserman Building at the Jules Stein Eye Institute (the white marble building on the left in the photo below). On the lower level, there are six state-of-the-art operating rooms. UCLA's Division of Ophthalmologic Anesthesiology provides anesthesia for surgery including cataracts, glaucoma, retina, strabismus, oculoplastic procedures, corneal transplantation, and for infants and children with retinopathy of prematurity.
The ophthalmic anesthesia rotation is for two weeks during the CA-1 year. The residents are assigned to pediatric cases that generally involve healthy infants and children. Residents also are involved with more complex cases, including retinal, corneal, and oculoplastic cases, performed under monitored anesthesia care (MAC) or general anesthesia. Almost all ocular surgery is performed at the Wasserman unless the patient's medical condition requires inpatient care.
