Treatment for:

Nutritional support

Why it’s done:

Placement of a feeding tube into the stomach (gastrostomy tube) or a feeding tube that passes from the stomach into the small intestine (gastrojejunostomy tube) allows nutritional support for patients who are unable to take sufficient food by mouth.

How it’s done:

An interventional radiologist uses X-rays to guide placement of a feeding tube into the stomach. When the stomach is abnormal, a longer feeding tube can be inserted which passes further into the small intestine.

Level of anesthesia:

Conscious sedation

Risks:

Bleeding, infection, damage to the small or large bowel, leakage into the body cavity

Post-procedure:

Two to four hours of bed rest

Follow-up:

As needed for leakage or obstruction of the tube
