In remembrance of the life of Dr. Bimal Masih

Written by Drs. Sansern Borirakchanyavat and Jason Abber

“Dr. Bimal Masih graduated from Madras Medical College in India in 1959.  He completed his surgical and Urology training in India, and upon moving to the US he spent a year in the lab of Frank Hinman Jr. at UCSF.  He subsequently completed his Urology training at UCLA in 1971.   Patrick Walsh was his co-chief resident.  Bimal joined SCPMG following his residency, becoming the first UCLA Urology graduate to join KP. In those days, Kaiser Permanente was not considered a desirable career for a young graduate of one of the most prestigious training programs in the country.  But Bimal often spoke of his belief in the KP model, that doctors did their best for patients when practicing without financial incentives in mind.

Bimal was an outstanding adult and pediatric surgeon.  He mentored many UCLA urology residents in the operating room as a clinical attending at Olive View Medical Center.  In addition, he did an introductory clinical urology course for medical students.  During his distinguished career, Bimal served for many years as Chief of Urology at Kaiser, Panorama City.

Bimal was a true gentleman who loved being a physician.  He also loved his Panorama City Urology family. After his retirement in 1997, he continued to work for the next 24 years performing shock wave lithotripsy for our department twice a month. He and his wife, Sulabha, attended our annual holiday party just about every year. He truly loved being in the hospital, caring for patients and stopping by the office to say hello to his friends after the OR was finished. He was an outstanding physician and truly gifted surgeon. But most of all, we remember him for his friendship, kindness, humility and compassion.”
