Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS)
Founded in 2002, the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS) at the University of Macau (UM) is a premier research and education institute committed to advancing Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) through scientific innovation, international collaboration, and talent cultivation. Over the past two decades, ICMS has built a comprehensive ecosystem integrating research, education, industry collaboration, and regulatory science. It offers interdisciplinary postgraduate programs, aiming to nurture future leaders in Chinese medicine and pharmaceutical sciences.
ICMS hosts the State Key Laboratory of Mechanism and Quality of Chinese Medicine (SKL-MQCM-UM), the first national key laboratory in the TCM field, restructured in 2025 to focus on mechanistic studies of Chinese medicine. It aims to become a global leader in scientific research in the field of TCM and natural products. The laboratory plays a strategic role in supporting Macao’s economic diversification and the Greater Bay Area’s healthcare innovation. SKL-MQCM also leads efforts in developing new therapeutic agents based on Chinese medicines or natural products, with goals to meet the global requirements of healthcare.
ICMS and SKL-MQCM are building a high-impact academic and industrial ecosystem that bridges tradition and modernity, positioning Macao as a global hub for Chinese medicine innovation, education, and internationalization.
