We presented another successful event on Saturday October 20, 2018

at UCLA California Nanosystems Institute (CNSI), UCLA Westwood Campus!

Guests were also treated to a short meditation by UCLA MARC's Ms. Vivian Hermiz, live musicians from UCLA Mindful Music, scrumptious catering from Chef Elana and her Team at Meal and a Spiel, '30second Breathing Tips and More' from Unplug Meditation Founder Suze Yalof Schwartz, Therapy dogs - Logan, Joshua and Oliver from UCLA People-Animal Connection (PAC), skilled demos and interactive opportunity for CPR training from Kevin at UCLA's Center for PreHospital Care, Teen Heart Health and ECHOS information from our UCLA Young Associates, and additionally - the skilled and caring RN's and MA's and volunteers from UCLA provided FREE Health screenings including; Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Glucose and BMI! The day was an informative, fun filled, delightful event!

Boston Scientific’s Close the Gap initiative reflects the company’s commitment to promoting health equity in partnership with committed healthcare providers and is focused on raising awareness and increasing access to healthcare for under treated patient communities across the United States. Close the Gap works in partnership with healthcare organizations through targeted education to impact: 1)Patient CV Disease Awareness and Treatment Options targeting higher risk and undertreated patient populations who need advanced CV therapy by providing ethnic and gender specific educational resources. 2)Access to CV Care through identification of new and existing patients who need advanced therapy. Focus on educating referring HCPs in the community.  Screen targeted patient populations and refer to the appropriate HCP. 3)Quality of Outcomes through the creation of resources to increase adherence to quality measures and improve patient care.

  • UCLA CARDIOVASCULAR CENTER

UCLA Cardiovascular Center Nurses will be offering Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Glucose and BMI screenings, on site at our event - so make this your first stop before enjoying our heart healthy menu treats. Screening will be available begining at 9am, and result information cards will be provided to each participant upon completion of screening, these results should be shared with your personal health care provider and are informational only.

The Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation department provides a comprehensive approach to cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation utilizing a multidisciplinary team of professionals including registered nurses, registered respiratory therapists, a licensed psychologist, certified exercise therapists, and registered dieticians under the supervision of our medical directors.

WomenHeart's mission is to improve the health and quality of life of women living with or at risk of heart disease, and to advocate for their benefit. WomenHeart offers support by connecting though our shared experiences, education by invited doctors and professions and advocacy through awareness for women living with heart disease. The WomenHeart West LA support group, a peer led support group that meets monthly at UCLA, is run by Amanda Daniels and Alisa Becket. Both Amanda and Alisa are trained Champions of WomenHeart and are living with heart disease.

Founded in 2010 by Elana Horwich, Meal and a Spiel is a private cooking school based on the philosophy that anyone can learn to cook. Offering cooking classes, both online and in person, recipes, videos, guidance for healthy living, spiels, and soon - a COOKBOOK! With a belief that love is the most essential ingredient, and sharing good food is a vehicle to a nicer planet, Meal and A Spiel stands for a world replete with delicious, consciously-prepared meals that are shared in generous spirit. Offering recipes that reflect a unique crossroads between authentic country Italian cuisine and the healthy practices of California – the result is a simple rustic fare that prioritizes flavor and indulgence.

UCLA People-Animal Connection (PAC) is one of the most comprehensive Animal-Assisted Therapy and Activity (AAT/A) programs in the nation. PAC volunteer teams (consisting of the canine and his/her human partner) offer companionship and warmth to more than 1,000 critically ill children and adults per month. Since its inception in 1994, PAC teams have recorded more than 120,000 in-patients visits, as well as hundreds of thousands unrecorded visits to families and guests to UCLA medical centers and community events.

UCLA Health Ornish Lifestyle Medicine heals hearts and transforms lives by altering the course of disease with a new approach to living. This program is scientifically proven to reverse progression of heart disease by providing a blueprint for lifelong transformations.

Our "Late- Life mood, stress and wellness research program" collaborates with the Women's Center cardiology clinic on the study of yoga versus memory training for women 50 y.o. and older with subjective memory complains. The program also studies the use of Tai Chi for depression in older adults, and conducts studies of treatment resistant depression in aging adults. https://www.semel.ucla.edu/latelife

Founded in 2014, Mindful Music shares the health benefits of music through live performance, education, and research. As a part of the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience & Human Behavior and the UCLA Healthy Campus Initiative, Mindful Music has introduced over 200 live performances featuring local artists in 15 unique spaces across campus. In times of high stress, suffering, and discomfort, the power of live music is the uplifting relief your heart is searching for. By connecting seemingly unlikely fields of health care and music, Mindful Music is dedicated to spread the power of live music into places of learning, working, and healing on a global level. 

MARC was created to bring to a renowned mental health research institution the ancient art of mindful awareness in a scientifically supported and rigorous form. Our center offers classes and workshops to the general public, teaching the skills of mindfulness across the lifespan, fosters and publicizes research to support the scientific benefits of mindful awareness, brings mindfulness to professionals through UCLA's medical education program-including doctors, medical students, staff and faculty and offer mindfulness tools and classes to support mental health professionals.

Each year, over 12,000 students participate in our life-saving programs in the areas of CPR, first aid, basic and advanced life support, and professional EMS education for paramedics and emergency medical technicians. In just a few hours, you can learn some of the most important skills of these professional first responders, enabling you to treat everyday injuries, or even save the life of a child, family member, or friend.

Unplug Meditation, the world's first drop-in, secular meditation studio, opened its doors in April of 2014. Our wide variety of simple and eclectic classes are led by the top experts and some of the best meditation teachers in the country. We edited the practice of meditation to make it interesting, inspirational and easy for everyone from busy skeptics to modern soul-seekers.  Our mission is to make it effortless to learn, and to inspire you to pause, breathe and unplug daily.  When you experience the powerful effects, including deleting stress, increasing productivity, finding your purpose in life and becoming calmer, healthier and happier, you get hooked!

  • HAMMERHANDS MUSICRelax and de-stress to soothing sounds for your mind, body & soul - music as therapy has been proven to increase wellbeing and HAMMERHANDS melodic tunes do the trick! Scott Williams plays the Hammered Dulcimer, a unique string instrument that produces a variety of tranquil and upbeat sounds. Scott also plays several other instruments including the mandolin, guitar, cello, bass, and drums to add to the depth of his music tracks and lay the foundation for his pieces.  He says "The hammered dulcimer is such an unusual instrument, people are very drawn to it. Children, especially, find it mesmerizing."  HAMMERHANDS contributed music videos to our media presentation.

 

  • ECHOS - Early Cardiovascular Health Outreach SMS (ECHOS) program   

The Early Cardiovascular Health Outreach SMS program, also known as ECHOS, educates, encourages, and empowers adolescents and young adults to take charge of their heart health in a fun and innovative way! Our program sends weekly text messages, providing tips and covering topics such as; nutrition and healthy eating, exercise, mindful living, sleep improvement, stress reduction, tobacco prevention, and diseases including high cholesterol, diabetes and heart disease. These tips and resources will keep teens and their families healthy.

The mission of the Teen Heart-Health Initiative is to share AHA-approved heart-health information with youth and teens around the world, with the aim to empower life-long heart-health habits and save as many future lives as possible, in the long-term.
