Gynecologic Oncology

Dr. Salani showed great compassion and empathy when caring for my sick Mom. She understood how anxious we all were and sent the results of the tests as soon as they became available to allay our fears. Thank you so much Dr Salani.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Cohen. First of all, I think he is a brilliant physician and surgeon. But, what really makes him stand out is how he made me feel like I was his only patient and that he would spend as much time with me as I needed. He was incredibly thorough in not only asking me about my history, but in explaining all my options. He called before my surgery to see if I had any more questions, and he called several times after to see how I was doing and to update me on the results. He emphasized that I should feel free to contact him any time with any questions. I think the highest compliment one can give a doctor is that they treat a patient like a member of their family and Dr. Cohen did that for me. I feel so lucky to have found him!

Maternal Fetal Medicine

My wife and I have been trying to conceive for quite some time now. And after multiple miscarriages, we finally conceived to full term...but as it goes our pregnancy was not without its new and scary complications. When Dr. Christina Han informed us that our baby only had one kidney and that it might be indicative of an underlying genetic condition, so many thoughts and worries and fears raced through our heads. Not to mention my wife also then having gestational diabetes. To say it was a whirlwind would be the understatement of our lifetime. However, Dr. Han and UCLA walked us through with such care and empathy through the entire process. Constantly checking in and answering our concerns (which there were many of.) And we are very happy and blessed now to have a healthy baby girl who we feel has been taken care of with the utmost diligence. UCLA in general have been so well-connected from department to department with our baby girl (and my wife) that it has made everything so seamless and really has lessened the burdens of worry and concern throughout the entirety of the process. Highly recommend Dr. Han. Truly a wonderful, caring and thoughtful physician.

-- Jason B.

Dr. Christina Han saved me during this pregnancy. The care, compassion, and patience in guiding me through it and my daughter's Mosaic Diagnosis... she made me feel confident in the pregnancy, and now that I've delivered... I've never been happier. She's a beyond remarkable doctor. Hold on to her.

-- Kc B.

Dr. Christina Han is a PHENOMENAL physician. My husband and I could not feel more fortunate to have been under her care for our pregnancy. We had a rocky road to becoming pregnant and were nervous about successfully getting to a live birth. Dr. Han was the ideal MFM; she was kind and organized, took every concern of ours seriously, responded to every question (and quickly)! and we always felt like we had someone looking out for us and our baby every step of the way. We felt like we could rest easier knowing Dr. Han was with us on this journey - she was so on top of everything and gave us really individualized, high-quality care. Our baby is here now, and we cannot thank her enough for playing such a big role in getting us here!

Obstetrics

"Dr. Sridhar is a true angel. She guided me through my pregnancy and made me feel incredibly safe and cared for. I now have a beautiful, healthy baby boy, and I feel blessed that I had her guidance and care throughout this journey.”

Dr. Sridhar is an amazing doctor who is thorough, attentive, and compassionate. She has the most pleasant and endearing disposition and really took her time with me during each appointment to provide the knowledge needed to make an educated decision and determine the best course of action for my birth plan, etc. She delivered my first baby in July 2021, and I knew from the initial visit that we would be in good hands as our well-being and safety were her greatest priorities. She is truly incredible, and I feel lucky to have had her be a part of such a momentous time in my life.”

Dr. Aparna Sridhar, Where do I begin? We knew we were in good hands from the first appointment we had with her. We met her in March of 2021 for my 8-week appointment. We met her again until I was full term. She educated us about what to expect, what was considered normal, and what to look out for during each appointment. She never made us feel uncomfortable or bad for asking so many questions. Each time we saw her, she had a BIG SMILE. We have her; the nickname is Dr. Sweetheart. During my care with her, I would email and call the office if I had any questions. She always got back to me in a day or two. She’s beyond wonderful, and I couldn’t feel any luckier to have been her patient. Thank you, Dr. Aparna Sridhar, from the bottom of my heart.”

"Dr. Chiang was my OB for my son. Despite the unusual circumstances of going through this experience during the current pandemic, he made me feel at ease throughout the entire duration of my pregnancy and delivery. He has always been very responsive to all my questions and addressing all my concerns in a calm and timely manner."

Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility

"I was very fortunate to have seen Dr. Molly Quinn for my reproductive endocrinology consult and fertility journey.  On my initial visit she was incredibly thorough and detailed and I felt so confident is continuing my care with her.  She talked me through everything in a way that I could understand and even wrote things down which made it easier to explain to my husband who could not be at the appointment with me.  Dr. Quinn the is the prefect combination of warm and professional which as a fellow physician I greatly appreciated throughout all of my follow up visits.  My husband and I are now the parents to a 1 month old and are so grateful to have started our journey with Dr. Quinn."

"I am fortunate to be one of Dr. Dumesic’s patients. He is the fifth doctor I saw on my journey to getting properly diagnosed and treated — there will not be a sixth! In addition to his incredible understanding of PCOS, Dr. Dumesic is kind, thoughtful and patient. Thanks to his insight and care, I have been symptom-free and feeling like myself again for the past seven years. I cannot imagine a more supportive, brilliant physician and UCLA is lucky to have him at the helm of Women’s Reproductive Health Research."

"Nearly six years ago, I was referred to Dr. Dumesic in hopes of experiencing the amazing journey of pregnancy and eventually having a family. From our very first meeting, my husband and I both sensed an ease with Dr. Dumesic's approach; he was very methodical in every step and explained the reasons on every decision to be made. Even after every hurdle we encountered, he held our hands every step of the way, and gave us confidence that we will eventually become parents. His bedside manner made me feel no longer a patient, but a part of his family. Now, fast forward six years later...our home is finally filled with the joy and laughter of two very active boys. Even after the birth of our second child, it will become more evident why Dr. Dumesic was placed in our lives. Although the delivery of my son went smoothly, I developed an infection, and was transferred to the ICU for ten days. Eventually, my doctors would find the cause, but I would have to undergo further treatments to save my life. Therefore, my doctors have always emphasized that my son saved my life, but we would not have my son without Dr. Dumesic's help. Therefore, it is also Dr. Dumesic that saved my life.
So, what words come to mind to describe Dr. Dumesic and the exceptional care I received with him? Genuine kindness, trustworthy, passionate, lifelong friend, and most importantly, my guardian angel."

"Dr. Dumesic and his clinic have set the bar very high in patient care and the treatment of PCOS. He was the first doctor I met with who took the time to put all the pieces together and explain the complicated dynamics of PCOS. From the very first appointment I knew that Dr. Dumesic was invested in my health and wellbeing. At each appointment he always takes the time to explain each step of the treatment process, answer questions, and educate me on PCOS.  I walk away from each appointment knowing I have all the information I need to make the next best choice in my health care. Each step of the way Dr. Dumesic has displayed genuine care and passion for helping women with PCOS and I know that I am receiving cutting edge care. Dr. Dumesic and his clinic have shown me and my family what true passion for patient care looks like and I am forever grateful for the ways that Dr. Dumesic’s medical care has impacted my health and living life with PCOS.  It is hard to capture all that Dr. Dumesic brings to my care. He is compassionate, thoughtful, dedicated to providing the best patient care, and passionate about PCOS. Simply said, Dr. Dumesic is the best." Read more about this patient story >

"I am thrilled to be ten weeks pregnant, and can’t imagine being in this position without Dr. Brennan. She is truly an exceptional doctor, and I can’t praise her enough.  In short, we had a great experience with her. I started seeing Dr. Brennan last year, when I quickly found out that conceiving would be a struggle. For someone that has wanted to be a mom, since her own mother died years ago, this was extremely devastating news. Dr. Brennan quickly reassured me that I had numerous options, and that she was fairly confident that I would be able to get pregnant. Beginning my infertility treatment was extremely overwhelming, and at many times scary, but Dr. Brennan was amazing during the whole process. As we worked our way through several failed attempts at getting pregnant, Dr. Brennan continued to be extremely supportive, caring, and positive. She patiently answered our numerous (and I mean numerous) questions, and thoroughly addressed all of our concerns. Never once making us feel rushed. Her attention and dedication was the same high level during my first consultation, as it was during my last appointment. Dr. Brennan responded to every email and phone message that I left for her, within hours. At times, I truly felt like I was her only patient. Dr. Brennan was absolutely fabulous on both a personal and professional level. She made both my husband and myself extremely comfortable during a stressful situation. She is incredibly knowledgeable and patient. I would strongly recommend her to any family and friend, without hesitation. She truly is an exception doctor, and human being. I am currently almost 10 weeks pregnant, and despite still having a long road ahead, my husband is already discussing going back to Dr. Brennan to help conceive our second child!"
Sincerely,
—Satisfied Patient of Dr. Brennan

"To Whom It May Concern:   For the past six months my husband and I have been struggling to begin our family. We have a few infertility issues and required medical assistance in conceiving. As I am sure you are aware, identifying this difficulty is time consuming, emotionally difficult and to be honest, at times embarrassing. Dr. Brennan took my husband and me through all of our options step by step in a safe and humorous way that allowed us to be put at ease. She answered all of our questions and never rushed us through an explanation (and she can tell you, I can talk for a while!!!). Treatment can be just as difficult as very personal activity is done in a more public type of environment and the emotional ups and downs while waiting for news is perhaps the most difficult thing I have ever had to handle. Dr. Brennan was always kind and patient with us, encouraging small victories and understanding when our hope faltered through failed attempts. In addition, all infertility costs were out of pocket and Dr. Brennan was always respectful of our financial situation while never compromising care or making us feels awkward for expressing money related concerns. Dr. Brennan is an amazing care giver who provides superior patient support and continually exceeds expectations. I could go on and on about the kind words of gratitude I have toward Dr. Brennan, however I will simply end by stating that you have an exceptional doctor on your team and I hope that you are aware of how amazing it is to find compassion in today’s often jaded healthcare system. We are now just over 10 weeks pregnant and are hopeful that this will be a successful pregnancy. Every day my husband and I talk about the amazing gift Dr. Brennan helped bring into this world and our gratitude will never lessen. Thank you for taking the time to read my comments."
Sincerely,
—Sarah

"Dr. Brennan has all the qualities one looks for in a physician, but rarely finds. For the 5 months that I was under her care, I was struck by her personal, individualized attention. She was thorough in her explanations and took her time answering my questions, often anticipating them. I was further impressed with her incredible professional responsiveness in terms of communication. She responded to emails and phone calls within the same day and always contacted me personally after lab results came in. These qualities alone would have set her apart from other physicians, but Dr. Brennan went further. Unlike physicians at other medical institutions, she was proactive about addressing the various physiological conditions I had going on. She understood that every factor, however minor, is still a factor, and she dealt with each one head on. Her expertise made me feel reassured, confident and taken care of. Medical institutions aren't always so in tune with individual needs. Patients are usually one of many and are treated as such. Dr. Brennan treats each patient as if they are the only one, and it is remarkable that she makes what could potentially be an impersonal institutional context more personal and thoughtful."

—Sumita

IVF Team at UCLA Brings Joy to Families
"We came to UCLA after being treated for more than 2 years because of infertility. We were absolutely hopeless and discouraged about becoming parents. Having a baby had become such a distant dream for us; nevertheless, the reality of getting pregnant was too difficult to achieve. I was given a possibly wrong diagnosis at another healthcare facility in LA which made us think about surrogacy as a prominent alternative. My life was ruined, and I was in tears all the time due to having the thought of not being able to experience the amazing journey of pregnancy. After my surgery got cancelled at the other medical facility, I was recommended to contact UCLA at once to confer with the infertility team there. What initially amazed us was the courteous way that the IVF staff at UCLA approached us. They were all very meticulous about their job, and all of them were absolutely on top of their tasks. Dr. Daniel Dumesic, at the UCLA infertility department, was my preferred specialist. He initially took a thorough look at my heavy, thick medical record that I had brought with me from the other facility. I immediately started feeling very comfortable and confident after a long time of being distressed about possible negative outcomes of my conversations with any infertility specialist. I was not scared this time at all.
Primarily, Dr. Dumesic took his time and spoke to us in depth. He looked at my history and walked us through his examination plans as well as his treatment options. I was at peace because I noticed he was trying to take one step at a time and taking everything into a different perspective than what I was told before. Dr. Dumesic never rushed to draw any conclusion without having necessary tests done, and we were absolutely pleased with his methodology. Dr. Dumesic’s strategy was to gather necessary information as such his treatment options would be less risky, and that approach immediately made us realize we finally came to the right healthcare facility and chose the most suitable specialist after all. The good news was that all of those tests and diagnostic appointments were scheduled without any delay, so unlike most medical facilities in LA, we didn’t have to wait for a long time just to get started. After surgery, Dr. Dumesic personally came to my bed to discuss with us what his diagnosis was, and what our options were in order to get pregnant. Fortunately, we were all on agreement on starting IVF as soon as I was ready. It was a joyful moment for all of us because after 2 years we started gaining hope again; a hope that was presented to us by UCLA’s IVF team who treated us like family. Dr. Dumesic and his professional IVF staff started taking care of me the best way possible. All of my appointments at UCLA were scheduled immediately, necessary tests were ordered and performed, important medical information was discussed with us, and most importantly we were given the option to contact UCLA IVF team at anytime we desired. I believe the level of communication at UCLA is superb, and I have never seen any other healthcare facility to be as responsive and caring as the IVF staff at UCLA is. Dr. Dumesic’s IVF nurse was always available to answer my phone calls or emails without making me wait at all, and that was very helpful during IVF cycle which can be emotionally and physically challenging. Until today, I have not seen any medical team to be so aware of every detail of their patient’s progress the way UCLA is.
Eventually, we started our IVF under Dr. Dumesic’s direct care. He is by far the most dedicated physician I have ever seen. He is very skillful, knowledgeable, aware of circumstances, and up-to- date about medical and technological advancements in the world. But, what makes Dr. Dumesic different than any other RE (reproductive endocrinologist) in town and made him become my hero in my journey of motherhood, is his unforgettable etiquette and his sincere humane character. He truly cares about his patients during such an emotionally strenuous time of trying to conceive. His passionate way of interacting with his patients made us become very faithful in his approach. He is very gracious and pays attention to different dimensions of medical field including psychological side of it. We could not ask for a better physician than Dr. Dumesic.
My husband and I truly believe in UCLA’s outstanding vision with respect to following areas:

  • High Level of Communication
  • Ease of Appointments
  • Excellent Bedside Manners
  • Accuracy of Diagnosis
  • Timely Treatments
  • Nurturing Patient- Doctor Relationship
  • Professional Attitude
  • State- of- the- art Technology
  • Affordable Medicine

We are one happy couple now that I am almost 4 months pregnant with our first child. We do believe that there is an absolutely great reason why UCLA is the number one hospital in The US West Coast and the fifth hospital in the whole nation when it comes to quality of care as we were touched by their professional and personal uniqueness. We are blessed to have been treated in LA’s local paradise called “UCLA’s IVF Department” and being taken care of by Dr. Dumesic, his IVF nurse, and other members of his team. They do a fantastic job in getting you the right medical treatments based on your needs. Yes, miracles do happen right near us, at our local hospital, UCLA. Now you probably know why we were motivated enough to take the drive from Irvine to UCLA during IVF just to be treated by Dr. Dumesic and his IVF team at UCLA."
Warmest Regards,
—Marjan Kordbacheh & Sam Samani, Irvine, California

Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery

"I'm 53 years old and lead an active lifestyle. A few years ago I developed a prolapse, and over a 2 year period my lifestyle subtly changed. I started living with it, putting up with the slowly increasing annoyances. I didn't walk as far, and everywhere I went I was on the lookout for the nearest bathroom. The changes were insidious and I started feeling like I was becoming old. I searched for the right Doctor and found Dr. Tarnay. He is my Superhero. A year ago he performed an operation to correct my prolapse and incontinence with laparoscopic surgery at UCLA. I now have my life back and once again I feel like I'm in my 20's. I was so worried, but I know I made the right choice. His advice and skills are life changing. I'm back to hiking, swimming, riding my bike and keeping up with my 14yr old! I'm forever grateful to Dr. Tarnay and his amazing team."

"I came to UCLA for a consultation because they offer all the available non-surgical, and surgical interventions for uterine fibroids. Hysterectomy? Really? That's the standard treatment for symptomatic fibroids? This is 2010, right? Those were just a few of the questions that leapt to mind after I was diagnosed with fibroids. I like to think I have more than a sentimental attachment to my uterus, so I decided to do some research of my own, and found there are options that spare your uterus, even options that preserve your ability to bear children if that is something you want. I came to UCLA for a consultation because they offer all the available non-surgical, and surgical interventions for uterine fibroids. My treatment turned out to be a combination of the two; Dr. Raman performed MRI guided focused ultrasound as Step 1 and believe me, it will restore your faith in technology. It's a completely non-invasive, out patient treatment, with little to no recovery time. After the procedure I went home, took a long nap, and woke up with fewer symptoms from my fibroids! I still wonder if there wasn't some form of magic employed. Step 2 was meant to be robotic arm laparoscopy but morphed into myomectomy due to the size, and density of the fibroid. Dr. Tarnay had been prepared for this possibility, even discussed it with me prior to surgery, which is another reason I'm glad I chose UCLA. The fact that uterine fibroids are so common, something like 70% of women have them, would have made the idea of focused treatment centers seem like a no brainer, but I bet if you're reading this you've been told that you need a hysterectomy. It's hard to express how happy I am with my outcome, and experience without it sounding as if I'm resorting to hyperbole. I actually have relief from symptoms I didn't even know that I had the watchful waiting period before I chose to DO something merely allowed my body, and mind to become accustomed to the fatigue, and pressure that grew right along with my fibroids. If you're ready to DO something about your own fibroids do yourself a favor, and have an assessment at UCLA; a state-of-the-art hospital that attracts innovative, talented doctors who will help you find the treatment option - or options as it was in my case - best suited to you."
—Jennifer

"For any woman anticipating a hysterectomy or prolapsed surgery, I want to give words of reassurance.  Although I had been very unfamiliar with medical and surgical procedures, Dr. Christopher Tarnay carefully took the time during my first office visit to explain to me in full detail all the available remedial options for my condition.  He respected my concerns and questions and answered them fully.  I felt completely involved in all the decisions.  It was evident to me that with Dr. Tarnay’s extensive experience and expertise in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, I could trust the outcome of the surgery. On the morning of surgery, I was made comfortable and calm.  I was supported by the caring and highly skilled staff of the UCLA Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and their depth of resources.  The pre-op and the post-op teams were reassuring and buoyant.  After the surgery, in the few days I was in my hospital room, the nurses closely monitored me, but always with grace and cheer.  I had the opportunity of observing Dr. Tarnay as a fine professor and teacher when I saw him working with nurses, students, and interns as he came to my room for post-surgical checkups.  This reinforced my feeling that I had selected the right doctor and the right medical center for this procedure. The recovery has been swift, without incident, and I am feeling my active self again."

"I just wanted to thank you for everything.  You and the rest of the entire staff I had the pleasure of dealing with today gave me so much care, compassion and closure. It was much needed and again I cannot begin to thank each and every one of you enough . There are some places you go for medical help and they are nothing but caretakers, there are others you go where people truly take care of others and within this entire process I felt heard and taken care of completely. Just wanted you to know I'm so grateful!"

Dr. Chen is an excellent physician and surgeon. I was extremely impressed with her compassion, breadth and depth of expertise, and procedural skills. She made my entire experience in her office easy, and the staff were 100% professional, caring, and efficient. I would recommend her to all of my family and friends.”

"I am recovering well with no pain. My husband and I are both very pleased with the treatment that I received at UCLA. Dr. Taylor was amazing and very professional; she answered all of our questions with kindness and compassion and assured us I would be well taken care of. The rest of doctors and nurses were great, too. The main reason we decided to have the procedure at UCLA was the care that you showed when we were deciding where to have the procedure done. You went above and beyond to answer our questions and provide all of the information that we needed - thank you!!

We really appreciate everything! Everybody made this difficult situation a little easier for us."

"I want to express my gratitude to the team of doctors and nurses who took care of me at UCLA Women’s Health. During a time of great stress, fear and grief, I felt truly seen and cared for. Their expertise and kindness made me feel safe. My doctors even held my hands while I was going under anesthesia, which showed such compassion that I’m still emotional about it! I am so grateful. Thank you for being the good part of an otherwise sad story.”

"Thank you and your staff for the outstanding support given to me during my time of illness. I can't express to you what that meant to me. Please don't ever change. You are the perfect Doctor. Thanks"

“I am writing this letter to commend and praise Dr. Zapata, Dr. Taylor, Dr. Szlachta-McGinn and Kate (scheduling coordinator) for their professionalism, kindness and overall compassion. In the most trying time of my life, these people were patient and showed empathy while doing their job to the highest level of integrity. Unfortunately, I was faced with the heart wrenching decision to terminate a much anticipated pregnancy. Kate was punctual and showed the greatest care while I was trying to schedule my pre-op, surgery and follow up appointments. She even went out of her way to come to the exam room and meet me. I volunteered at a hospital as a teenager and have lately been visiting my own grandparents at a few hospitals. I have NEVER EVER seen doctors wheel in their patients to the operating room. Those couple of minutes of being pushed on the gurney by three doctors put my mind on that shock level rather than the painful, heart wrenching procedure about to happen. I will never forget the feeling of my heart about to explode and trying to keep my tears from flooding the operating room while the anesthesiologist was administering medication and Dr. Szlachta-McGinn holding my hand, reassuring me that they were going to take good care of me. I wish I didn’t have to end my pregnancy but the fact that I dealt with such individuals made the whole process a million times easier to cope with. No matter how many times I repeat it, it will never be enough. I commend and thank Dr. Zapata, Dr. Taylor, Dr. Szlachta-McGinn and Kate individually for the utmost humane treatment they showed me. I will forever remember them and their humanity.”

Dr. Parvataneni is the greatest.  I don't have enough words to express how grateful I am to have him as my doctor/surgeon.  He is professional, caring, timely, intelligent and goes far beyond what is expected of him.”

Dr. Sridhar (faculty), Dr. Walker (resident), Dr. Berger (fellow) & Dr. Rose (resident)- I'm so lucky to have been under their care and couldn't have asked for better doctors.  These women helped me through some of the most difficult days of my life.  I'll always remember those days with deep sadness, but, also full of appreciation for the doctors and UCLA staff.”

Dr. Angela Chen is an amazing Dr.  Fantastic bedside manner.”
