Pediatric Pathology
Summary
Pediatric pathology is a unique subspecialty defined by the age of our patients, rather than by an organ system or disease process. It ranges from conception and in-utero development through disorders, such as cystic fibrosis and congenital heart defects, that present in childhood and continue to affect patients as adults. Pediatric pathologists are versed in broad aspects of anatomic pathology, genetics, and pediatric laboratory and transfusion medicine. Complications of pregnancy and prematurity, congenital malformations and inherited disorders, immunodeficiencies and infections, pediatric blood diseases and tumors, are but a few examples of the areas that pediatric pathologists help to diagnose and manage.
