The Section of Minimally Invasive Surgery, lead by Dr. Erik Dutson, serves as a hub of basic science, bioengineering, and health services research associated with bariatric surgery. In collaboration with the Center for Obestity and Metabolic Health (COMET), various studies examining barriers to bariatric surgery and associated biochemical physiology are ongoing. UCLA also has performed several large nationally representative studies using the MBSA QUIP database. Mouse models of fatty liver disease and associated impact of bariatric operations are also an area of ongoing investigation.
