The Lechner Lab in the Division of Endocrinology, Department of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine invites applications for a Postdoctoral position to conduct research in cancer, immunology, and endocrinology. Dr. Lechner’s research program focuses on understanding mechanisms of autoimmune toxicities (IrAEs) from checkpoint inhibitor cancer immunotherapies. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) are a powerful new form of cancer treatment, but their benefits are limited by the development of autoimmune side effects in up to 60% of patients. Despite significant efforts to date, the cause of these treatment-related autoimmune toxicities remains unknown. Dr. Lechner’s group has developed a novel mouse model of IrAEs in which anti-PD-1 + anti-CTLA-4 treatment causes multi-organ autoimmunity, including thyroiditis, colitis, and pneumonitis. Using this model, our research group is investigating mechanisms that drive ICI-associated autoimmunity, including including IL-17+ Type 3 immune cells and pathogenic CXCR6+ T cells. Our goals are to 1) identify mechanisms driving immune related adverse events in immune checkpoint inhibitor cancer treatment, and 2) develop therapeutic strategies to prevent IrAEs that do not impair anti-cancer efficacy of ICI treatment. A PhD is required.
