Pediatric Surgery

UCLA Division of Pediatric Surgery

UCLA Pediatric Surgeons are devoted to the surgical care of infants and children with birth defects and acquired illnesses. Working closely with primary care pediatricians, family physicians, and pediatric specialists, UCLA pediatric surgeons treat a wide variety of clinical problems in neonatology, gastroenterology, oncology, nephrology, non-cardiac thoracic surgery, and several other specialty areas. Our pediatric surgeons have extensive experience with the most complex of surgical procedures in children and are involved with cutting-edge research protocols. New technologies for minimally invasive laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery for infants and children are practiced routinely. The faculty also provide pediatric surgical support for the Pediatric Trauma Center at the UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital. Expecting parents can also make prenatal consults with the UCLA pediatric surgeons for known fetal anomalies through our UCLA Fetal Care Center.

UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital is a busy regional and international referral center for critically ill infants and children who require our pediatric surgical care with state-of-the-art facilities, including the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) as well as extensive array of pediatric subspecialitists available. At all times, the pediatric surgical patients are treated by personnel dedicated to the care of children. The private hospital rooms are designed such that parents can stay with their child in comfort while in the hospital. Special play areas and child-life specialists are available to provide a non-threatening and playful atmosphere for children during their stay. On the other hand, more routine procedures (e.g., hernias) can be treated frequently with a brief outpatient surgery at the UCLA Ambulatory Surgery Center.

In addition to the clinical programs and education, the UCLA pediatric surgeons have active programs in the pediatric surgical research to foster new treatments for children with surgically treated illnesses.
