Jesus's Pathway:

Where were you born and raised? What is your favorite part of your hometown?
Born and raised in Caracas Venezuela for 26 years. Among my cherished memories of my hometown, I hold dear the lush green mountains, soothing rain, and the joy of playing ball under the rain.
What motivates you in your work in neurology department?
I have several daily motivations. The intricacies of the human brain never fail to captivate me, I love learning about it, how to maintain its optimal performance and delay its degeneration. The dedicated scientists at UCLA continually inspire me with their exceptional research efforts, seeking to develop new treatments and seeing their passion fuels me. Knowing that we are caring for people with the best options we have available today.

What is your current research focus in Alzheimer's disease?
Our lab’s approach is based on the hypothesis that AD results from an imbalance in an extensive array of networks. Therefore, we are developing small molecules designed to stimulate expression of neuroprotective genes. This endeavor aims to pave the way for the development of therapies capable of preventing/modifying the course of AD.
What are some influential moments in your career journey? How did these help you get to where you are today?
The most impactful moments in my life have been the result of interactions with family members and mentors. My parents instilled in me a curiosity for science that continues to shape my interests. Additionally, my wife and mentors have played a crucial role in guiding me, helping me navigate through distractions and focus on my career journey.

What advice would you give to someone interested in pursuing drug development research, specifically for Alzheimer's disease?
Patience, as it will take years of hard work to see research fruit. Bring your utmost dedication and curiosity to your work, find joy and gratitude in each day of the long journey! Rather than conforming to existing standards, strive to improve and innovate upon them.
What is your favorite part of your career at UCLA?
The diversity of its people and their readiness to collaborate, combined with the stunning campus and favorable weather!
How do you spend your time outside of work? What is your favorite hobby?
I love spending time with “my girls” (wife and our 2 adorable Chihuahuas). We have our routine to walk to coffee shops, exploring neighborhoods by bike and reading. Riding my bike is by far my favorite hobby.
What is a professional goal that you are working towards now?
To develop compounds that could aid individuals with AD in regaining memory and enhancing their quality of life.
