The Meltzer Family Endows the APSF/SOCCA Alan G. Sieroty Memorial Lecture
Joseph Meltzer, MD, Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology and Medical Director of the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit at UCLA, and his family recently endowed the Alan G. Sieroty Memorial Lecture for Patient Safety in Critical Care, a new joint offering from the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF) and the Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists (SOCCA). The keynote lecture is to be given each year at the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS)/SOCCA Annual Meeting. The endowment was established in memory of Dr. Meltzer's uncle, the late Alan G. Sieroty (1930 - 2024), who was a former California state senator dedicated to humanitarian and environmental causes, a champion for racial justice, and a long-time philanthropist and patron of the arts.
At the IARS/SOCCA 2025 Annual Meeting, the inaugural Alan G. Sieroty Memorial Lecture, entitled "Integrating Human Factors Engineering and Implementation Science to Support Safety in Anesthesiology and Critical Care," was given by Meghan Lane-Fall, MD, MSHP, Chair of Anesthesiology at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Lane-Fall's lecture was followed by an interactive panel discussion on the topic of patient safety in anesthesia and critical care.
