UCLA Anesthesiology Resident Physicians Run 2023 LA Marathon

March 19, 2023 | Emma Huebner, MD

Michael LoBasso, MD

Four UCLA DAPM resident physicians participated in the Los Angeles Marathon on March 19, 2023: Daniella Goñi, MD, PGY-1, Michael LoBasso, MD, PGY-1, Oliver Drewry, MD, CA-2, and Adela Perez, MD, CA-3. They utilized hours of their limited free time to follow training plans and complete weekend runs, up to 20 miles in length, to prepare for the event.

Dr. LoBasso was the fastest UCLA anesthesiologist of the day, clocking a marathon time of 3 hours and 22 minutes, with an average mile time of 7 minutes and 42 seconds.

Oliver Drewry, MD

Dr. Drewry raised $1587 for neurological diseases by running on behalf of the McCourt Foundation for his first-ever marathon. He had experienced a calf injury while training and had to take some time off, but he did not let the setback stop him from completing the race. In the weeks leading up to the event, he could be found in the resident library during breaks from the OR doing calf exercises to prepare for race day.

All four residents were rightfully proud of their accomplishments and a bit sore while walking the halls at work the following Monday. Dr. Perez commented on the race: “Hands down the most difficult and painful thing I’ve ever done. Super proud of myself!”

Congratulations are in order for these resident physicians’ commitment and endurance in crossing the finish line on race day!
