UCLA Anesthesia Team Advances Global Surgical Care in El Salvador

Written by Brianna A. Ortbals, CRNA

In early June, UCLA anesthesia team members Brianna Ortbals, CRNA, Lindsay Brown, MD, and Christine Trieu, MD returned to Chalchuapa, El Salvador for their third medical mission with Health Missions International (HMI).

Over the course of the week, the team provided anesthesia care for a wide range of life-changing surgical procedures, including cleft lip and palate repairs, ENT and sinus surgeries, rhinoplasties, and dental interventions. Many of these procedures helped restore essential functions such as breathing, feeding, speech, and confidence—especially in children who otherwise would not have access to these services.

This continued partnership with HMI reflects UCLA’s commitment to global health, education, and compassionate care. The team is grateful for the privilege of serving this community and looks forward to supporting future missions.
