DAPM 2023 Healthcare Quality Week

October 31, 2023 | Quenesha Caballero

Healthcare Quality Week (HQW) was established by the National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ) in 1985 to recognize healthcare professionals engaged in promoting quality and patient safety.

The DAPM Quality team organized a random drawing from the Quality Improvement and Safety (QI&S) Good Catches recognized over the past year. Two QI&S Good Catch Champions were selected: Jennifer Katsura, CRNA, and Parker Dobson, MD. Our winners received UCLA Care packages filled with treats. The Quality team also created a HQW quiz and extended participation to DAPM members

throughout the week. Three winners were chosen randomly from quiz participants: Reed Harvey, MD, Michael Wolfe, MD, and Chris Wray, MD. Winners received decorative UCLA socks. If you missed the quiz, you can still test your knowledge by answering the question below:

Which of the following are medication best safety practices?

  1. All used medications in the anesthesia workspaces are wasted prior to leaving the room.
  2. All used medication syringes taken from an anesthesia workstation for use during patient transport are discarded and/or wasted as soon as possible after the transport.
  3. All DEA-controlled medications are returned to a Pyxis, drop box, or pharmacy representative between cases whenever possible.
  4. Propofol waste is documented in the Pyxis and expunged into the CSRx containers.
  5. None of the above.
  6. All of the above.

Answer: 6. All of the above are medication best safety practices.
