Department members gathered on Friday, January 5, 2024, at Luskin Conference Center to celebrate Soban Umar, MD, PhD, receiving the Thomas M. Grove Term Endowed Chair in Anesthesiology. The purpose of the Thomas M. Grove Term Endowed Chair is to support an anesthesiologist physician-scientist in the Academic Senate series who is actively engaged in high-quality laboratory and/or clinical research. The Chair was also established to advance and strengthen the research, educational, and clinical mission of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

Dr. Umar's laboratory has investigated the molecular mechanisms and pathophysiology of pulmonary hypertension and associated right ventricular dysfunction, with the long-term goal to devise novel regenerative therapies for these cardiopulmonary disorders. The Umar Lab has also been interested in developing novel strategies for perioperative cardiopulmonary organ protection.

Congratulations to Dr. Umar!
