David Boldt, MD, MS, Associate Professor, has been named the inaugural Chief, Division of Trauma and Adult Multi Specialty Anesthesiology in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at UCLA.

Dr. Boldt joined UCLA DAPM in 2011, after completing two years of General Surgery Residency at the University of Hawaii from 2005 to 2007, an Anesthesiology Residency at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Chicago, IL from 2007 to 2010, and a Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 2011. He also obtained a Master of Sciences in Medical Molecular Genetics from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, United Kingdom in 2000.

Since joining us in 2011, Dr. Boldt has been a member of the Critical Care Division in our Department, focusing his time as an intensivist in the Ronald Reagan Cardiothoracic ICU and the West LA VA Surgical ICU. In the operating room, he works broadly at many sites including Ronald Reagan Medical Center, Santa Monica Hospital, and Martin Luther King Hospital. He serves as an instructor for Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) here at UCLA and is a member of our Department Clinical Research Committee. Dr. Boldt has led several clinical research projects at UCLA and has served as a PI or site-PI on multiple externally funded research protocols, some leading to publications in major journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, and Critical Care. He has been the author or co-author on key chapters in several textbook publications, including his chapters on the Management of Acute Pain in the "Textbook of Critical Care" and Pharmacologic Adjuncts to Intubation in "Emergency Medicine Procedures". He has been a speaker at National and International meetings on topics including refractory hypotension, the role of VA ECMO in non-cardiogenic shock, and Angiotensin II in vasodilatory shock.

In his new role, Dr. Boldt will guide the Division to build on a tradition of excellence in Clinical Practice, Research, and Education. The clinical mission of the Division is to provide perioperative clinical care of trauma and surgical patients undergoing a wide variety of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures at UCLA. The Division of Trauma and Adult Multi-Specialty Anesthesiology works collaboratively with other Anesthesiology Divisions and Service Lines such as Acute Pain, Cardiothoracic, Critical Care, Liver Transplantation, Neurosurgical, Obstetric, Ophthalmologic, Pediatric, Thoracic, Vascular, and many others. Current research by Division faculty and intra- and interdisciplinary collaborators are abundant across the Service Lines. The Division education mission includes teaching medical students, residents, and fellows, synthesizing and disseminating knowledge, and participating in local, regional, national, and international educational forums. Residents, fellows, and students are prepared for future clinical practice, leadership, research, and academic careers via clinical teaching, tutorials, mentorship, board review, simulation, didactic sessions, and journal clubs.

Congratulations to Dr. Boldt on becoming the inaugural Chief, Division of Trauma and Adult Multi Specialty Anesthesiology!
